About Max

Muzzleloader Accuracy Xperts (or M.A.X.) was created and is owned by Russell Lynch.

Russell is a life-long hunter and outdoorsman, and shot professionally as a long-range rifle and pistol competitor. He was the 2nd shooter in the history of the US Marine Corps to go Nationally Distinguished in one shooting season. He earned the title of “The President’s Hundred” 2 years running and was also a USMC Scout Sniper for over 6 years. Along with the many professional shooting schools he has attended, Russell has also taught at many shooting schools, including the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Russell has been a Certified Law Enforcement Officer & Marksmanship Instructor for the State of South Carolina for over 18 years. Russell will tell you that the study of ballistics has been part of his life for over 35 years, first as a runaway hobby and then professionally.

M.A.X. was created when Russell had a poor experience with an upper-end, inline muzzleloader around 2003. Despite repeated phone calls, the manufacturer of the rifle was not a lot of help on fixing the accuracy problem, so Russell took matters into his own hands. Utilizing his past professional experience with shooting, ballistics, rifles and marksmanship to achieve precision, long-range accuracy, Russell took his knowledge and resolved that situation. Realizing that everyone did not have the extensive background he had, Russell began to share his experience with others so that they might get the same results from their muzzleloaders. And M.A.X. was born.

How M.A.X. works

Muzzleloader Accuracy Xperts (M.A.X.) is an independent research, evaluation, testing and consulting company for all modern, in-line muzzleloading products and equipment. We test everything from rifles, primers, bullets and powders to any other products and accessories the industry has to offer which deals with modern in-line muzzleloaders.

M.A.X. is independent from any company, especially those that manufactures or supplies any products for the muzzleloading industry. We have no sponsors and cannot be paid for a good or bad review from anyone in the industry. In fact, we choose what we will evaluate and when.

We know of no other person or company that provides this type of service to the muzzleloading consumer anywhere in the world.

M.A.X. purchases whatever item(s) will be tested out of our own pocket from either a retail store or distributor of our choice. Once the evaluation and testing is completed, the findings are offered to the manufacturer or supplier of the item(s). Results are also shared with the general public through M.A.X. videos, books, booklets, blog articles and seminars.

Only after we have purchased and tested a product will we receive free or discounted merchandise (only of the type tested, no new products or untested items will be accepted, and nothing altered from their original form) to use with future testing or video projects. For example: After M.A.X. completed testing of powders and found the top brands which met or exceeded M.A.X. standards, we will then accept powder from manufacturers for use in testing in other evaluations, such as bullets or rifles, etc. At M.A.X., we will only use products we have purchased, tested and found to be of value to the consumer. We shoot A LOT and only accept products to help off-set the cost of testing and video projects.

M.A.X. never excepts rifles from any manufacturer for testing. We purchase all rifles from a random supplier of our choosing.

M.A.X. has also adopted the phrase “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”. What this means to our customers is, only products we have proven to be a value in achieving maximum accuracy and big game performance will be shown in our videos. If the consumer does not see a well-advertised, highly promoted muzzleloading product in any of our instructional products, there is probably a reason. However, it is always possible that due to the shear number of products on the market, it may not have been evaluated at this time.

Our goal at M.A.X. is to provide the consumer with good, factual information so that they can make a well-educated purchase of muzzleloading rifles, optics and other accessories.

Our promise to M.A.X. Customers is that we will always provide them with truthful and useful information, always. Whether they own a product we’ve tested and are looking for greater accuracy or performance, or are searching for more statistics to make an informed decision before purchase, our videos and other instructional products will show consumers how to get the most from their money.

How We Get Our Data

At Muzzleloader Accuracy Xperts (or M.A.X.), all our data is range-fired data, not data from a test barrel under a lab environment. It is always shot with factory, out-of-the-box rifles. The rifles are not altered in any way and are purchased by M.A.X. at a random supplier of our choosing, we never accept untested items from manufacturers. All other items, such as bullets, primers, powder and anything else shown in our informational products are available to anyone from the normal channels within the muzzleloading market.

Any load data shown or talked about in our publications is within the manufacturers recommended safety limits. In other words, everything we show you is safe and can be used with complete confidence, per the manufacturer.

We at M.A.X. will not accept or share any data with our customers that will not produce a group of one inch or less from a factory rifle. All loads in any of our published products have produced 1 inch or less groups from the test rifle. In fact, most of our loads will provide groups of less than ¾ of an inch.

All loads, depending on the powder used, are shot though very specific barrel conditions. These conditions are necessary in order to produce the tight groups that we publish and can be done by anyone. These conditions are covered in detail in our publications.

The first muzzle velocities are shot through a chronograph at 35 feet. This 35 feet is then later accounted for with the use of ballistic software in order to find the “true or actual muzzle velocity”. The reason for this is that to achieve a consistent reading from the chronograph, the sabot must be off the bullet as it passes through the sky screen on the chronograph. We then subtract the low velocity of a string from the high velocity and this gives us the velocity variance. This tells us how consistent the load is. The more consistent the load, the tighter the groups. Almost all of our loads average less than 20 FPS (feet per second) variance. The velocity shown in our data is the average. We arrive at this speed by adding the velocity of all shots fired in a string of shots and then dividing the total by the number of shots.

Once we have the average muzzle velocity for a given load, that information is run though a ballistic software program. All ballistic software does pretty much the same thing: very advanced math. We tell the software all the information about the make-up of the load and in return it gives us data which we use to modify our loads until we can deliver precise, long-range and accurate shot groups.

That data gives us the following:

1) The velocity for 100, 150, 200 & 250 yards.

2) The flight path of the bullet. All of our loads are for a 100 yard zero. The drop of the bullet past 100 yards is shown in inches.

3) The foot pounds of energy (F.P.E.) that the bullet will deliver at the given range.

4) The flight time of the bullet. That being the time in seconds in which it takes for the bullet to reach the target at a given range.

These calculations are very accurate and are cross-checked in 2 other programs from our standard program just for further verification.
